Chinese New Year Performance – Jan 2020
This week, at Monega, we celebrated the Chinese New Year. A fantastic performance took place in the building, to immerse our children in the Chinese culture and costumes! Artists and performers captured the attention of all students and together we welcomed 2020, the Year of the Rat.

Modern Foreign Languages Coffee Morning
Hello!
Welcome to the MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) Coffee Morning!
The purpose of our Mandarin Curriculum at Monega is to ensure children are prepared citizens of the world and to learn about different cultures, encouraging them to explore and respect other people. We are committed to developing strong, life-long linguistic skill by opening pupils’ minds to different opportunities.
In order to do this, here at Monega we prepare our children since nursery. Students learn about colours, greetings and the Mandarin culture.
This year, students from Year 3 to Year 6 have also started to write Chinese characters in their brand new books! Also, we have just celebrated the Chinese New Year, by inviting Chinese artists to our school who performed showcasing their best skills.
Besides learning Mandarin, here at Monega we promote inclusion and we want to make sure every child feels proud of their cultural background. For this reason, we promote Language of the Month. Each month, our children learn greetings and basic words in a different language.
This month the language we are learning is Romanian. Multumesc!

Mental Health Awareness at Monega
At Monega, we recognise how important mental health is and we promote activities for staff wellbeing. This term, as a team building exercise, our staff were invited to go sailing, canoeing and paddle boarding with the Sea Cadets at the Royal Albert Docks.

Children’s Portraits
Across the school, children have completed self-portraits. As children move through the school, children produce increasingly accurate drawings of themselves. As the children progress, you can see that they observe very carefully and use the effect of light and shading on the face.

Progress in Writing
This week we have been looking at writing progress across the school. We are so impressed with everyone’s work, it is clear to see that you have all made such fantastic progress since returning to school.

Black History
This week we celebrated Black History. We learnt about local, national and international heroes; people who have changed the world for the better.
We studied black heroes, participated in debates about the significance of Black History, and recited poetry from black poets. We partook in African drumming and dancing.
We heard the international storyteller, Kate Corkery, explore folktales from Africa and the Caribbean.
These heroes have inspired us. Who inspires you?

Anti-Bullying – Odd Socks Day
On Monday 16th November, the staff and children at Monega took part in Odd Socks Day to start off Anti-bullying Week. We all wore odd socks to show we are all different and that it is good to be yourself! The children completed lessons based on acceptance and differences and had lots of fun talking about what makes them different!
We encourage all children to promote kindness as this is one of the biggest influences on wellbeing. Here you can see our leaflet that helps the children to understand the importance of kindness.

Eco Warriors
At Monega we are working hard to become a more eco-friendly school. We have designated Eco Warriors but understand that we all have a part to play, in achieving this task. Pupils designed posters to promote and remind us all, about our key actions to help keep our environment green.

Rainbow Zone
We have created a Rainbow Zone where we have celebrated all the heroes of Covid-19. We have a range of beautiful books about our Covid-19 heroes on display in this area. We also have a range of non-fiction books to give pupils information they need about Covid-19.

Read Around The World
The children of Monega have worked very hard to ensure that our environment is beautiful and intriguing. This hall display is titled ‘Read Around The World’, as you walk around the hall you are able to step into stories and texts that take you to new places. Children have used a wide range of artistic techniques in order to create a beautiful backdrop for their exceptional writing. We hope you will be able to come see the display very soon.
